Surprisingly, left-handed people are uncommon. The fact is, only one in ten people in the world are left handed. August 13 is International Left Handers Day where we southpaws observe our singularity from the other 90% of the planet. To celebrate this favorite day, I’ve compiled a few interesting facts found from studies about left handed people.
Lefties Are Better at Sports
Lefties have been proven to perform better than right-handed athletes in a variety of sports. In baseball, left-handed batters typically have the edge since most pitchers are right handed and cannot predict the outcome of a left-handed hitter. Lefties also have an advantage in Olympic sports like boxing, fencing, tennis, and volleyball. Fitting since we’re currently supporting our Wisconsin athletes in Rio.
Lefties Are Better Multitaskers
I’ll brag on this one. Lefties are proven to be better at processing information and organizing it in their brain. Think about it. In the workplace, lefties usually have to adapt to everything in a manner which just doesn’t seem natural - writing with pens that smear all over the arm as we write left to right, that annoying spiral on the left side of notebooks, to the awkward way the mouse is by the computer.
Lefties Remember Past Events Better
Scientific American looked at a study about how left-handed people can remember past events better than right-handed individuals. This is because lefties and their relatives have larger corpus callosums, which leads to better communication between both sides of the brain.
Natural Advantage To Music, But Deterred With Right-Handed Instruments
Nice to learn that as a leftie, there might be a natural advantage when it comes to music. For 10 years I played the trumpet and I loved it because I love brass. And I was really pretty good at it. When I was first learning, I can recall turning my trumpet this way and that, thinking; “Is there any way to flip this thing around so I can use the valves with my left hand?” The answer was “no”. To celebrate International Left Handers Day, I thought of a few office supplies and products that could help you stand out amongst a right-handed world.

As a leftie, it’s awkward when you have right-handed scissors. Be comfortable while cutting paper.
