There are two common third-party certifications. BIFMA’s level® addresses product sustainability from multiple perspectives. These include energy usage, ecosystem impacts, and other factors.
SCS gives ratings on office furniture based on indoor air quality impacts during manufacturing. Office furniture with SCS Indoor Advantage certifications meets rigorous indoor air quality emission requirements and can qualify for LEED credits.
Greenguard certificates mean that a furniture piece has met “strict chemical emissions limits, which contribute to the creation of healthier interiors.” This usually means that the product goes under rigorous testing for indoor emissions, including testing for low amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).
What is Post-Consumer Waste?
In some products, you will see that a certain percentage is made from recycled content and another smaller percentage is made from post-consumer waste. This is when a piece of furniture includes materials from another product that is no longer in use. For example, if you buy a chair that is made from 15 percent post consumer waste, that percentage of the chair is made from other materials that have been recovered from landfills.
Sustainable Furniture Practices
HON has used sustainable fabrics and recycling practices for years. Many of HON’s popular seating lines feature plant based polyols foam to help reduce their fossil fuel use. This is created from soybeans, corn, and other plants. HON has also created comold, which is made from 97 percent wood fiber and is used in most HON seating products. This eliminates 4,000 tons of waste annually.
