“United we stand, divided we fall” is a phrase that first appeared in the United States in a Revolutionary War song in 1768. It later became a popular battle cry in the Civil War and World War II. In the aftermath of the Fourth of July, we would like to put a different spin on the phrase – Independent We Stand. That means EZ Office Products stands tall and proud as an independently owned American business.
During the week leading up to the Fourth of July, we were one of thousands of independent businesses across the country to join the American Independent Business Alliance in celebrating Independents Week. Independently owned businesses embody the choice, diversity, character and freedom that are so important to local communities and their residents, so let’s make sure the spirit of this initiative continues throughout the year.
“By declaring ‘Independent We Stand,’ we’re not just building upon the momentum of last week,” said Rose Molz, President of EZ Office Products. “We’re continuing the movement to recognize small, independent businesses that began more than 50 years ago when President John F. Kennedy first introduced Small Business Week. It’s important for people to realize how they can strengthen their communities by supporting local, independently owned companies.”
What can you do to support and stand tall with independent businesses?
The first and most obvious step is to buy local. Eat at a local restaurant. Buy groceries from local farmers markets and grocers. Buy materials and equipment for projects around the house from your local hardware store. Do your back-to-school clothes shopping at local shops and boutiques. Products and services from local, independent businesses are focused on your needs, not the needs of corporate shareholders who are out of state and out of touch.
Share your experiences with friends and family. Post a comment on the company’s Facebook page. Write a letter to your local newspaper. Teach your children about the economic and sustainability advantages of supporting local businesses, and inspire the next generation of independent business owners.
Independent We Stand. It’s not just a clever catchphrase. It’s a strongly held belief in the value of local, independently owned companies. It’s a commitment to supporting the local business community. Let’s make it a year-round effort.
