Over the last decade or so the office products industry has become dominated by national retail chains such as Staples, Office Depot and Office Max. As their market share increased, small and medium businesses found themselves accessing a narrowing product selection with fewer choices and having to conform to more rigid engagement processes that included less personalized one-on-one services.
In 2008, two very experienced leaders in business products industry teamed up to launch a new kind of marketing solution that fills those voids. Today, this company is SmartXpress. Those two leaders are Steve Schwarz and Mark Hampton. They first began working together in 1980 at United Stationers, a wholesale and retail distributor of business products. Back then, United Stationers was a family owned business with revenue under $200 million. By 2001 revenue had grown to almost $3.5 billion when Schwarz, then President of the Supply Div. left to pursue a new venture with private equity partners. When Hampton left his position as Sr. VP, Marketing in 2008, United’s revenue was approaching $5 billion.
